Yourmove.ai: A keyboard that inspires first impressions

Designing a AI powered keyboard integration that simplies moves users past the paralysis of shooting your shot in online dating

Disciplines

Duration

AI to ignite romantic connection

In 2023, I designed on an iOS keyboard integration for Yourmove.ai’s first mobile app experience after the company’s initial success on mobile web.

I lead research, design, and validation among a group of data scientists, engineers, and founders to bring a new integration to market.

The keyboard helped us create a stickier product while reducing friction in using the product.

This in turn led to more premium subscriptions and ultimately helped users find more human connection amongst the noise of dating apps.

What did we learn?

Empathy towards any and all users

I’ll be the first to tell you I had some initial reservations of designing an AI tool to help game online dating.

It all starts though with talking to the user and you’ll likely be surprised.

Taking time to actually talk to end users made me realize our personas were self described “awkward people” who just never had someone show them the way in

Fun fact—multiple users from India talked about modern dating being introduced in their countries as an alternative to arranged marriage. Now they were expected to date in a western context, without any models or coaching on what that looked like. Yourmove provides them a non judgemental way to find their own voice

Validate early and often

When designing in a space without existing mental models, it’s easy to fall in love with your own ideas or go down a rabbit hole.

There was a moment in our design where our founder had conviction in a wireframe that looked like the one below

We left that brainstorming session on a high to go to a AI community meetup together where I thought to take our the prototype on my phone to get some opinions from some practitioners.

I realized immediately from the puzzled faces we were completely off. We would’ve wasted some dev cycles if we decided to dive head first without getting some opinions.

Be careful with making any assumptions

By putting in the time to do user research and looking at our data, I realized I was wrong in my own assumptions.

Users weren’t using Yourmove.ai for a low effort, high volume play. Instead, they were coming to the site repeatedly because of their own writers block.

In fact, users typically took our generations as a starting point to then add their own finishing touches on what they were writing.

My job as designer is a way or them to craft an experience that suits their needs
